Last night
jet_ss,
daisybuttercup, Merri and I ventured over to The Arclight to see the one and only big sceen showing of the Director's Cut of Troy. Director Wolfgang Petersen was there to do a Q&A before hand. For those of you who haven't read about the details of the DC there are an addtional 30 minutes added back into the film. Most of that is extended scenes allowing for character development. There are a few new scenes including one between Hector and Paris at the very beginning and an introductory scene with Odysseus. Since it's an unrated version the violence is back in and the love scenes are a litle sexier. In fact during the post-hot sweaty sex scene with Paris and Helen I was eating popcorn at the exact moment the camera pulled back even further to reveal even more of Mr Bloom (sorry still no sight of his little archer) and I did a quick intake of breath and swallowed a poporn kernel whole! I thought
jet_sswas going to have to give me the Heimlech Maneuver.
It's facinating and depressing to hear Director's talk about how the studios so confine them. Petersen was getting it from all sides to keep the movie middle of the road: "not too violent, no nudity we want that PG-13 rating!" And the violence is back in full force. The sacking of Troy in particular is brutal. They had to scrap the original soundtrack when test audiences hated it. So he hired James Horner 5 weeks before the movie opened to rescore. Horner would literally be writing something in LA, it would get overnighted to London to Wolfie and put on the film, no time to tweak or change. For the DC the music editor changed things around a bit, still using the Horner score, but moved pieces from one scene to another, took music completely out of a few scenes and made the score much better.
The strange thing is, I know it's the same film (with the same issues as before like the soap opera blocking in the scene with Paris and Helen in Paris's room) but whatever Petersen did to the footage I found the performances subtler and even understated in some cases. The part where Hector is saying good bye to Priam and Priam calls him back to say how proud of Hector he is Bana has this restrained show of emotion that killed me. And my favorite part, Paris cowering at his brother's feet after getting his ass handed to him by Helen's husband has a few additional moments that are incredible.
The Director's Cut of Troy would make a great birthday present for someone we know.....
Oh, a couple movie recomendations: Into the Wild (excellent, heart breaking and heart warming). The Jane Austen Book Club (utterly adorable) and Across The Universe (kick-ass soundtrack!)
